Germany: Restaurant targeted in xenophobic attack

BERLIN (AA) – A Turkish restaurant was set on fire in an arson attack early Thursday morning in the eastern German city of Chemnitz.

Police spokesman told Anadolu Agency that they suspected a xenophobic motive behind the attack, which caused extensive damage to the restaurant but no injuries.

Mehmet Ali Tulasoglu, owner of the Mangal restaurant, said the attack came only a week after a similar incident, when suspected far-right extremists attacked a Persian restaurant in the city.

The police asked for the public’s help on Thursday in identifying the suspects.

This August and September Chemnitz witnessed violent far-right protests in which mobs hunted down people deemed “foreign-looking, ” threw stones at migrant-owned shops, and attacked a Jewish restaurant.
