JAKARTA, Indonesia (AA) – The death toll from earthquake that rocked eastern Indonesia on Aug. 5 has reached 436, local authorities said on Monday.
According to a statement by Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster management agency, another 543 aftershocks occurred after the earthquake.
The economic loses in the region is estimated to be over 5 trillion Indonesian rupiah ($342 million).
On Saturday, Nugroho said that nearly 14,000 people were also injured in the earthquake, while more than 387,000 people were evacuated to safe areas.
A total of 67,875 houses, 468 schools, 6 bridges, 3 hospitals, 10 clinics, 15 mosques, 50 prayer rooms and 20 office buildings were damaged.
The search and rescue operations are ongoing in the region.
On Aug. 5, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake jolted island of Lombok.
The earthquake was centered northeast of the city of Mataram on Lombok island — a popular tourist destination — 15 kilometers under the surface, said the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics.
