Daesh attack in western Iraq kills five

By Suleiman al-Qubaisi

ANBAR, Iraq (AA) – Five Iraqi soldiers and pro-government tribesmen were killed on Thursday in a deadly attack by Daesh militants in Iraq’s western city of Ramadi, an army officer has said.

Daesh militants attacked Ramadi’s Buissa district with car-bombs on Thursday, Colonel Walid al-Duleimi told Anadolu Agency.

“Five soldiers and tribesmen were killed and six others injured in the ensuing clashes with Daesh militants,” he said.

The officer added that U.S.-led coalition warplanes had destroyed two car-bombs before they were detonated, while three others had been blown up by security forces on the ground.

Thursday’s attack comes only one day after at least 89 people were killed and scores injured in Baghdad in a series of attacks for which Daesh claimed responsibility.

Iraq has been dogged by rampant insecurity since mid-2014, when Daesh overran the northern city of Mosul and declared a self-styled “caliphate” in parts of Iraq and Syria.
