Black pervades Turkey press to commemorate Gaza martyrs

By Beraa Gokturk

ISTANBUL (AA) – The color black dominated Tuesday editions of several prominent Turkish dailies to commemorate the scores of Palestinian protesters martyred on Monday by Israeli troops on the Gaza-Israel border.

The first several pages of many Turkish newspapers — including Hurriyet, Sabah, Milliyet, Posta and Vatan — were shaded in black in a show of mourning.

Two other prominent broadsheets, Yeni Safak and Star, both displayed their headlines against black backgrounds.

Hurriyet wrote about Monday’s “diplomatic massacre”, in reference to the relocation of the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and the “celebration of death” in reference to Israel’s public celebrations amid the ongoing bloodshed.

Milliyet, for its part, described the embassy celebrations in Jerusalem as the “inauguration of shame”.

Sabah condemned what it described as “Israeli genocide”, while Haber Turk described Monday’s violence against unarmed protesters as an “atrocity”.

Star newspaper asserted that “Israel killed while the world watched”, while Yeni Safak said the embassy move was akin to “occupying Jerusalem a second time”.

Posta, meanwhile, cringed at the “horrific applause” that accompanied the new embassy’s inauguration, while Vatan’s headline merely read, “Damn It”.

On Monday, at least 60 Palestinians were martyred while demonstrating on Gaza’s border against the embassy move, which coincided with the 70th anniversary of Israel’s establishment — an event Palestinians refer to as the “Nakba” or the “The Catastrophe”.
