An average of 1,000 patients in Turkey recover from coronavirus every day and as many new cases are reported, the country's health minister said on Sunday.

A total of 997 more recoveries from coronavirus were reported in the country over the past 24 hours, bringing the tally to 202,010, Fahrettin Koca wrote on Twitter citing Health Ministry data.

The country's death toll from the virus rose to 5,491 with 16 new fatalities reported.

Turkey’s presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin reiterated Sunday that historical mosaics of Istanbul’s iconic Hagia Sophia will be preserved following the reconversion from a museum to a mosque, as they have been for the past 500 years.

Turkish police arrested at least 27 people Sunday in simultaneous operations in Istanbul for their suspected links to the Daesh/ISIS terrorist group, said a police source in the Turkish metropolis.

The pandemic has killed more than 605,000 worldwide, with more than 14.45 million confirmed cases, according to figures compiled by the US’ Johns Hopkins University.

The number of recoveries from COVID-19 across the globe surpassed the 8 million mark.

With 38,902 new cases and 543 deaths in the last 24 hours, India early Sunday recorded its biggest surge in COVID-19 cases to date. The country’s case tally to date is now at 1,077,618, as the total death toll has climbed to 26,816, revealed Health Ministry data.
