US: Trump, NRA to talk ban on gun sales to terror suspects

WASHINGTON (AA) – Republican presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would meet with the National Rifle Association to discuss banning the sale of arms to individuals on a terror watch list.

Trump’s announcement comes amid debates around gun control following a deadly shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, last weekend that killed 49 victims and wounded 53 others.

“I will be meeting with the NRA, who has endorsed me, about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns,” Trump tweeted.

But a day before the tweet, the NRA appeared to dismiss such a move.

“Restrictions like bans on gun purchases by people on ‘watch lists’ are ineffective, unconstitutional, or both,” the NRA said via Twitter.

By Wednesday it tweeted that it was “happy to meet” Trump to discuss the issue.

“Our position is no guns for terrorists—period,” it said. “Due process & right to self-defense for law-abiding Americans.”

Democratic lawmakers are pressing their Republican colleagues to find common ground on gun control.

Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy has launched a filibuster in the Senate to press Republicans to accept legislation that would ban terror suspects from buying firearms and require universal background checks.

“I’m going to remain on this floor until we get some signal, some sign that we can come together on these two measures, that we can get a path forward on addressing this epidemic in a meaningful, bipartisan way,” Murphy said.

The state of Connecticut was the site of a deadly shooting in 2012 in which 26 victims, including 20 children, were killed at an elementary school, by a lone gunman.
