WASHINGTON (AA) – The U.S. appointed a new special envoy Friday to coordinate Washington’s policy in Africa's Great Lakes region.
Peter Pham will take over for Senior Coordinator for the Great Lakes, ambassador Larry Wohlers.
Pham previously worked as vice president of the Atlantic Council think tank's Africa Center.
"Dr. Pham will work in close coordination with the Assistant Secretary for African Affairs and our ambassadors in the region to further the Department’s work toward lasting peace, stability, and economic prosperity in the Great Lakes region," State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.
"U.S. ambassadors to the countries of the Great Lakes region remain charged with the conduct of bilateral relations."
