UPDATE – Turkish stocks end day with losses

ANKARA (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index lost 2.77 percent on Thursday to close at 94,496.80 points.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index fell 2,691.07 points, down from the midweek close of 97,187.87 points, while it started the day at 97,043.02 points.

The BIST 100 hovered between 94,496.80 and 97,071.76 points during Thursday's trading. Compared with the previous close, 10 stocks on the index rose, 89 fell, and one was flat.

The BIST chemicals petrol plastic index was the top gainer — up 1.50 percent — while the BIST banking index fell the most, losing 6.73 percent.

Shares of energy giant Tupras (TUPRS) racked up the best performance, rising 4.46 percent, while stocks of Turkish conglomerate Alarko Holding (ALARK) saw the biggest drop, losing 8.13 percent.

As of the daily close, the total market value of the BIST 100's listed companies was around 620 billion liras ($103 billion) with a trading volume of 7.27 billion liras ($1.18 billion).

The most-traded stocks were private lender Garanti, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, defense company Aselsan, private lender Akbank, and telecommunications giant Turk Telekom.

Based on market capitalization, the top listed companies were Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($6.80 billion), iron and steel producer Eregli Demir Celik ($6.43 billion), and Tupras ($5.74 billion).

By market close, the U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate rose to 6.1490, up from 6.0340 at the close on Wednesday.

The euro/lira rate was 7.1020, compared with 6.9620 at the close on Wednesday, and the GBP/TRY exchange rate was 8.0120, versus one British pound for 7.8460 Turkish liras at the previous close.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, the price of one ounce of gold was $1,203.00 at daily close, versus $1,202.50 at close on Wednesday.

As of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT), the price of Brent oil stood at around $85.72 per barrel, hovering between $85.33 and $86.42 during the day.

Since the beginning of this year, Brent oil price has risen from $66 a barrel.
