UPDATE – Turkey's Borsa Istanbul up over 1.5 pct at close

ISTANBUL (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index rose by 1.62 percent to close at 92,552.71 points on Wednesday.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index started the day at 91,316.41 points and gained 1,478.60 points from Tuesday's close of 91,074.11 points.

The benchmark index hovered between 91,087.89 and 92,583.49 points, while 78 stocks on the index were on the rise, 18 were on the decline, and four were flat compared to the previous close.

The total market value of listed shares on the BIST 100 was around 597.3 billion Turkish liras ($111.6 billion) at the close, and the daily trading volume was 5.4 billion Turkish liras ($1.01 billion).

Shares of polyester manufacturer Sasa climbed the most, up 8.58 percent, while stocks of casting producer Cemas did the worst, falling 6.25 percent.

The most-traded stocks were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, private lender Garanti, leading defense company Aselsan, state lender Halkbank, and iron/steel producer Kardemir.

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate reached 5.3170 at close, down from Tuesday's close of 5.3540.

The euro/lira rate also dropped at close; 6.0680 versus 6.0920 at the previous close.

One British pound traded for 6.7330 Turkish liras, while the GBP/TRY rate was 6.7640 at close on Tuesday.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, the price of one ounce of gold was around $1,248.55 by market close, up from $1,248.00 a day ago.

The price of Brent crude oil dropped to $57.12 per barrel as of 6 p.m. (1500GMT) Wednesday, versus $58.58 at previous close.
