UPDATE – Turkey's Borsa Istanbul up by nearly 2-pct at close

ISTANBUL (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index climbed 1.9 percent to close at 104,394.73 points on Monday.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index started the day at 103,287.56 points, gaining 1,942.99 points from Friday's close of 102,451.74 points.

The benchmark index hovered between 103,280.41 and 104,656.55 points during Monday's trading.

The total market value of the BIST 100 was around 680 billion Turkish liras ($130 billion) by market close and the daily trading volume was 7.22 billion Turkish liras ($1.37 billion).

On the first transaction day of the week, 78 stocks on the index were on the rise, while 16 were on the decline, and six were flat compared to the previous close.

The top listed companies by market value were Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding ($8.33 billion) and private lenders Garanti ($7.34 billion) and Akbank ($6.87 billion).

The highest trading volumes were posted by national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, Garanti, and state lender Vakif.

The shares of participation bank Albaraka were the top gainers — up 20 percent — and machinery company Cemtas dropped most by 4.59 percent.

The U.S. dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate was 5.2680 at close, up from the last week's close of 5.2460.

The euro/lira rate increased to 5.9620 at Monday's close, versus 5.9550 at the previous close.

One British pound traded for 6.8030 Turkish liras, while the GBP/TRY rate was 6.8070 at close on Friday.

In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, the price of one ounce of gold was around $1,307.50 by market close, down from $1,313.10 the previous day.

The price of Brent crude oil dropped to $61.50 per barrel as of 6 p.m. (1500GMT) Monday, versus $61.77 at the previous close.
