UPDATE – Turkey’s Borsa Istanbul up 2.24% on Wednesday

ISTANBUL (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index closed Wednesday at 1,409.19 points, up 2.24% from the previous day.

After starting the day at 1,384.90 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index earned 30.82 points from Tuesday's close of 1,378.37 points.

During the day, the index's lowest value was 1,380.71 points, while its daily high was 1,409.19 points.

The total market value of the BIST 100 was around 1 trillion Turkish liras ($123.69 billion) by market close, with a daily trading volume of 16.64 billion Turkish liras ($2.06 billion).

In the midweek session, 87 stocks on the index rose, 12 fell, and one was unchanged compared to Tuesday.

The highest trading volumes were posted by private lender Garanti BBVA and iron/steel producers Erdemir and Kardemir.

Polyester producer Sasa was the best performer, with its shares up 9.97%, while stocks of sports organization Fenerbahce dropped the most, down 8.39%.

The price of one ounce of gold was $1,740 by market close, up from $1,728 at the previous close, according to data from Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets.

The price of Brent crude oil was $66.07 per barrel as of 6.20 p.m. local time (1520GMT).
