UPDATE – Turkey's Borsa Istanbul down at close

ISTANBUL (AA) – Turkey's benchmark stock index decreased 3.59% to 1,152.70 points in the closing session of Tuesday.

After starting the day at 1,197.10 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index lost 42.97 points from Monday's close of 1,195.67 points.

On Monday, Borsa Istanbul removed two zeros from its indices — including BIST 100 and BIST 30. The index was around 119,000-120,000 level last week.

During the day, the index hovered between 1,152.70 and 1,198.16 points.

The total market value of the BIST 100 was 861.6 billion Turkish liras ($125.9 billion) by market close, with a daily trading volume of 23.7 billion Turkish liras ($3.44 billion).

On the second transaction day of the week, 5 stocks on the index rose, 95 were down compared to Monday.

The highest trading volumes were posted by defense giant Aselsan, insurance company Gunes Sigorta and iron/steel producer Kardemir.

Gunes Sigorta was the best performer, with its shares up 5.30%, while stocks of refrigerator and air conditioner producer Klimasan dropped the most, losing 8.68%.

The price of one ounce of gold was $1,930 by market close, down from $1,937.50 at the previous close, according to data from Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets.

The price of Brent crude oil was around $43.40 per barrel as of 6.15 p.m. local time (1515GMT) on Tuesday.
