ANKARA (AA) – At least four police officers were killed after a man armed with a knife attacked a police headquarters in France's capital Paris, local media reported Thursday.

The attacker was shot dead by police officers at the scene.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo confirmed on Twitter that the attack caused multiple casualties among police officers.

"Paris is mourning for its people this afternoon after this appalling attack on the @prefpolice.

"The toll is heavy, several policemen lost their lives. In my name and that of the Parisians, my first thoughts go to the families of the victims and their relatives," Hidalgo said.

Following the attack, French President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and Interior Minister Christophe Castaner arrived at the scene to get briefing.

Castaner said that the attacker was an officer who was working at the police headquarters since 2003.

He added that the attacker also injured a police officer.

Police raided the home of attacker and arrested his wife.

Paris Prosecutor Remy Heitz said that an investigation was launched into the case.

Any statement was yet to be made on the reason of the attack.
