UN Security Council to meet over Syria airstrike

NEW YORK (AA) – The United Nations Security Council will meet Friday morning to discuss the U.S. airstrikes on Syria after a deadly chemical weapons attack in Khan Shaykhun, Idlib.

The meeting, called by Council member Bolivia, will take place at 11.30 a.m. (1530 GMT), according to the U.S. mission to the global body.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the gathering would discuss three different draft resolutions floated since the Khan Shaykhun attack.

One of them, drafted by the U.S., the U.K. and France, looked likely to be shelved Wednesday after Russia objected to its wording as a “provocation”.

The U.S. strikes came in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack Tuesday in northwestern Syria that killed more than 100 civilians and injured around 500 others.

The U.S. fired 59 Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian military air base American officials believe was used to carry out the attack, the Pentagon confirmed.
