ISTANBUL (AA) – A Turkish relief association has announced the launch of a new aid project to provide bread to some 3,000 poor Yemenis every day.
The announcement was made at an event in Istanbul organized by the Turkish Sadakatasi Association as part of a campaign launched in September entitled, “Raise your voice in Turkey for Yemen “.
Speaking at the event, association president Kemal Ozdal said the new bread-distribution project was aimed at “alleviating the suffering of hundreds of thousands of Yemeni civilians” whose lives have been impacted by the country’s ongoing conflict.
Ozdal went on to voice hope that the planned bread deliveries might help as many as one million Yemenis who would otherwise face the specter of starvation.
Over the course of the last three months, he said, the association had managed to reach some 200,000 Yemeni civilians through its various activities.
Impoverished Yemen has remained wracked by violence since 2014, when the Houthi rebel group overran much of the country.
The conflict escalated in 2015 when Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched a devastating air campaign in Yemen aimed at rolling back Houthi gains.
To date, tens of thousands of Yemenis — including numerous civilians — are believed to have been killed in the ongoing war, which has left much of the country’s basic infrastructure in ruins.
