KAYSERI, Turkey (AA) – A Turkish businesswoman on Saturday was elected the first chairwoman of a club playing in the country's top-tier Turkish Super Lig football division.

Kayserispor in central Turkey held a meeting to elect Berna Gozbasi — the sole candidate — permanent chairperson by a unanimous vote.

After being elected club chair, Gozbasi said that the new board will do their best to propel the team to the top of the league, as Kayserispor are currently in last place with seven points.

The club’s current poor run makes them a candidate for relegation to a lower division.

Gozbasi added that she is a determined person so she takes up her duties with a positive attitude.

Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoglu, Turkey's youth and sports minister, and the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) both congratulated Gozbasi on her new post and wished her good luck.

The Kayserispor board last month unanimously elected Gozbasi interim chair after the resignation of Hamdi Elcuman, her predecessor.

Gozbasi previously served as an adviser to the club as well as worked in marketing and trade in the Middle Eastern and African markets.

She has received many awards for her successful entrepreneurship.
