ANKARA (AA) – Turkey has launched a project to manufacture an indigenous long-range air missile defense system, the country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday.

Turkey has taken the first step by launching the project — named Siper meaning Shield in English — to take the country to a “higher league,” Erdogan said at the inauguration ceremony of “National Technology Development Infrastructure” in the capital Ankara.

“The first delivery is planned to be done by the end of 2021, ” said Erdogan.

He noted the country’s current national input ratio in defense industry is 65 percent and said his government aims to raise this ratio.

Erdogan said Turkey is improving to have a voice in every field of defense, aviation and aerospace technologies.
