ANKARA (AA) – Turkey has seen the highest rise in the number of international patent applications across the world, the head of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office said.

International patent applications rose 46.7% to 2,058 in 2019 in the country, versus the previous year, Habip Asan told Anadolu Agency.

With this figure, Turkey overtook several countries such as India, Russia, Brazil, Indonesia, Israel, Spain, and Austria.

Turkey is among the first 15 countries with the most international patent applications, with the 2,058 applications last year.

"Almost all of these 15 countries are developed countries, except China, India, and Turkey, which are emerging markets," he stressed.

Turkey is also the first country in Europe with its number of design and brand applications, Asan noted.

Domestic patent applications also rose 10.57% to reach 8,126 last year, compared to 2018, he added.
