Turkey: Number of newspapers, magazines go down in 2016

ANKARA (AA) – The number of newspapers and magazines, and their annual circulation saw a decline in Turkey in 2016 compared with figures from 2015, Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) announced on Wednesday.

The number of newspapers and magazines stood at 6,265 in the country in 2016, which is a decrease of 7.9 percent compared with 2015; 59.7 percent of these publications were magazines, according to a TurkStat release posted on its official website.

Total annual circulation of newspapers and magazines in the country decreased by 20 percent year-on-year in 2016, it said. The total published annual circulation of newspapers/magazines in 2016 was around 1.705 billion, around 94 percent of which was newspapers’ circulation.

Official figures show 6.6 percent of the newspapers published in 2016 were national that held 82 percent share of the total annual newspaper circulation.

The remaining 18 percent of newspaper circulation were local and regional that accounted for 93.3 percent of all printed newspapers.

Last year, 54.8 percent of published magazines were national publications, which contributed 71.6 percent to the total annual magazine circulation.

TurkStat also said 90 percent of total annual newspaper circulation was daily newspapers while 56 percent of the total annual magazine circulation was monthly magazines.

On the content side, 86.9 percent of newspapers had political/news/actual content while 2.9 percent had sector-specific/professional content while 2.1 percent had local administration content, it said.

The top three weighted kind of content for the magazines published in 2016 were sector-specific/professional content (18.1 percent), academic content (13.3 percent), and education/examination content with a share of 7.6 percent.

TurkStat data also revealed that the number of newspapers and magazines published in both Turkish and English languages was 770, while there were 10 newspapers plus 90 magazines published only in English language.
