Tanzania embarks on steam therapy to fight coronavirus

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AA) — Tanzania’s government Monday launched a nationwide campaign to promote steam therapy to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Speaking to reporters in Tabora, Regional Administration and Local Governments Minister Suleiman Jafo said the campaign is aimed to promote alternative remedies, including steam inhalation and consumption of more fruits and vegetables to fight infections and boost immunity.

“The coronavirus has no place in our country. We will effectively kill the virus by steam inhalation, and eating fruits and vegetables,” he said.

According to him steam therapy, which entails a concoction of herbs infused with neem, is “the best way to fight infections”.

The minister also advised people in the East African nation to eat ginger, garlic, watermelon oranges and lemons to boost their immunity.

Ever since the government promoted steam therapy to fight the coronavirus, thousands of people have been flocking to shops selling steam machines, although health experts say there’s no evidence such an approach can help curb the spread of coronavirus.

The move comes amidst widespread criticism against President John Magufuli, who termed the COVID-19 vaccine “dangerous”.

President Magufuli questions the efficacy of conventional medicines, and has repeatedly urged citizens to use alternative remedies.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Dorothy Gwajima called upon citizens to follow the directives given by health experts such as washing hands with soap and use of steaming and traditional medicines to prevent infections.
