ANKARA (AA) – Taiwan’s National Kaohsiung Art Center, a complex of four theatres, is branded as the world’s largest performing art center.

Designed by Dutch architecture company Mecanoo, the art center was inaugurated by President Tsai Ing-wen last month.

The complex features a 1,981-seat concert hall, a 2,236-seat opera house, a play and a recital house under the 30,300-square-meter roof.

Built under a single white roof with a wide public space, it is located near an old military barrack.

Francine Houben, the creative director of Mecanoo, said that the “unique” roof was inspired by banyan trees.

“I had to create a really new public space specifically for Taiwan, for Kaohsiung, that catches the wind of the ocean and the ventilation of the tropical space,” she added.

The center was constructed over eight years. It cost more than $350 million.
