IDLIB, Syria (AA) – Assad regime forces killed five civilians and injured 15 on Tuesday in the opposition-held Idlib province, one of Syria’s de-escalation zones where attacks are prohibited, and the number of casualties may rise, the Syrian Civil Defense said.

Mustafa Haj Yusuf, head of the Syrian Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, told Anadolu Agency that the regime launched air attacks early Tuesday in residential areas of Idlib.

The attacks mark a continued violation of the UN's cease-fire, he added.

According to Yusuf, regime warplanes hit the central area of Idlib, and other areas like Binnish, Ma’arrat Misrin, and Ram Hamdan.

Syria has been locked in a devastating conflict since early 2011 when the regime cracked down on demonstrators with unexpected ferocity.

According to UN officials, to date hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict.
