Sierra Leone: Road accident leaves 8 dead in Freetown

FREETOWN, Sierra Leone (AA) – Eight people were killed in a road accident in the capital, Freetown, Sierra Leone’s military confirmed late Monday.

The victims include five military personnel and three civilians, military medical officer Lt. Col Stephen Sylvalie told state broadcaster SLBC.

“The military personnel were heading for the army war graves to bury one of their comrades when the accident occurred. Coming down the hill on Spur Road in the west of the capital, the vehicle lost control and ran into civilians,” Sylvalie added.

He said scores more were critically injured and admitted to the 34 Military Hospital. The dead have been taken to the mortuary.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.
