S.Africa records 58 new coronavirus deaths, 1,422 cases

ANKARA (AA) – South Africa on Wednesday reported 58 new coronavirus-related fatalities and 1,422 more infections, the nation’s health minister said.

The nationwide death toll rose to 52,846, while the caseload stands at 1,54 million, Zwelini Mkhize said on Twitter, citing Health Ministry data.

Some 1,47 million recoveries have been registered thus far, representing a recovery rate of 95%, according to official figures.

Over 9.8 million coronavirus tests have been conducted in the country of almost 60 million people so far.

Earlier, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a partial ban on alcohol sales over the long Easter weekend to stem the spread of the coronavirus

The ban will be in effect from Friday to Monday for the duration of the Easter holiday.

“On-site sales at restaurants, shebeens and bars will be allowed, according to licensing conditions, up until 11 p.m. (2100 GMT),” the president said.
