Russia, US hold consultations on North Korea

MOSCOW (AA) – U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun on Tuesday held several meetings with Russian officials in Moscow.

According to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Biegun discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula with the Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov.

“The efforts of the countries involved in the settlement process are highly appreciated. The parties agreed to step up efforts for an early political and diplomatic solution to all the problems […] including nuclear one “, the statement said.

The same topic was discussed in Biegun's meeting with another Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov. The two diplomats also discussed “certain issues pertaining to non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and arms control “.

Recently, the U.S. State Department said it was working on details of an upcoming second summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The first summit between the leaders took place in Singapore on June 12, and Trump and Kim both signed a joint-statement reaffirming their commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
