Roadside bomb kills police officer in Egypt’s Sinai

CAIRO (AA) – An Egyptian police officer was killed and another top security official injured on Friday when their armored vehicle struck a roadside bomb in North Sinai, according to the state media.

Akhbar al-Yom newspaper quoted an anonymous security source as saying that a police captain from a special forces unit had been killed by an improvised explosive device planted on the side of the road.

Major-General Nasser Hussein, assistant director of security in Central Sinai, also reportedly sustained a serious head injury.

The Egyptian authorities have yet to officially comment on the incident.

The Sinai Peninsula has remained the epicenter of a militant insurgency since 2013 when the army ousted Mohamed Morsi — Egypt's first freely elected president — in a military coup.
