IDLIB, Syria (AA) – Regime warplanes attacked the town of Arihah in Syria’s northern Idlib province, leaving two children dead, according to local civil-defense sources.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency on Tuesday, Mustafa Haji Yousuf, the head of Syria’s White Helmets civil-defense agency, confirmed the airstrikes and the two casualties.

Located close to the Turkish border, Idlib falls within a network of de-escalation zones in which acts of aggression are expressly forbidden.

Syria has only just begun to emerge from a devastating conflict that began in 2011 when the Assad regime cracked down on demonstrators with unexpected ferocity.

According to UN estimates, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict.
