Qatar pledges to provide education to one million girls

DOHA (AA) – Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Tuesday pledged that his country would provide “quality education” to one million girls by 2021, according to Qatar’s official QNA news agency.

The emir announced the initiative while participating in a roundtable discussion on women’s education held on the sidelines of a UN General Assembly meeting currently underway in New York.

The emir also pointed to Qatar’s “Educate a Child” program, which recently succeeded in providing some 10 million marginalized children with access to primary education.

Participants at the roundtable discussed means of eliminating the many obstacles preventing girls and women — especially those in crisis-prone areas — from obtaining quality education.

The discussion was attended by several senior officials currently participating in the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly.
