Naomi Osaka wins US Open in women's singles

NEW YORK (AA) – Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka beat American opponent Serena Williams in the U.S. Open women's singles final to win the tournament on Sunday.

Osaka defeated 36-year-old Williams by 6-2 and 6-4 in two sets lasted for one hour 19 minutes in the final and won the US Open in women's singles category.

With this victory, Osaka, 20, became the first Japanese athlete to win a Grand Slam final.

In addition to the trophy, Osaka was awarded $3.8 million.

Grand Slam tournaments are the four major tennis contests held annually and these are the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

Held in New York, the US Open is the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year.
