Muhyiddin takes oath as new Malaysian prime minister

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AA) – Muhyiddin Yassin took the oath of office Sunday as the eight Prime Minister of Malaysia.

The oath was taken before King Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah at the State Palace

The king appointed Muhyiddin, the head of the Malaysian Indigenous United Party prime minister Saturday to end political turmoil.

The decision was made after the king met with the leaders of political parties to ask for names of candidates for prime minister.

Mahathir Mohamad had been interim prime minister before resigning Feb. 24.
