Kipchoge, Ibarguen named world athletes of the year

ISTANBUL (AA) – The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) named the male and female athletes of the year on Tuesday night.

Both at the age of 34, Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge became the male athlete of the year, while Colombian Caterine Ibarguen was named the female world athlete of the year at the IAAF Athletics Awards 2018 event held at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.

Kipchoge won the London Marathon in April in 2:04:17. Five months later, he also won the Berlin Marathon in 2:01:39 to smash the world record.

Ibarguen won horizontal jumps at the Central American and Caribbean Games, the IAAF Continental Cup and at the IAAF Diamond League finals.

The Colombian athlete was victorious in eight triple jump competitions, ending 2018 with a world-leading mark of 14.96m and a national record of 6.93m in the long jump.
