Kenya frees 1 mall attack suspect, 3 to stand trial

NAIROBI, Kenya (AA) – A Kenyan court on Monday ruled that three out of four suspects, who were held for six years on suspicion of plotting a terror attack, have a case to answer.

Militants stormed Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall on Sept. 21, 2013, killing 67 people and injuring dozens.

Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi found one person innocent while three others were charged with various crimes.

All three were charged with the “commission of a terrorist act and conspiracy to commit a terrorist attack, giving support to a terrorist group. ”

Abdi Liban was also charged separately for being a member of the al-Shabaab terror group and possession of articles connected with terrorism offenses.

Hussein Hassan was charged over harboring persons committing terrorist acts.

The suspects denied the charges. The case will be mentioned on Jan. 21.
