GAZA, Palestine (AA) – At least 37 Palestinian protestors were injured Monday evening by Israeli gunfire during their participation in the “Marches of Return “ near the buffer zone between the Gaza strip and Israel, according to Palestinian ministry of health.

In a brief statement the Gaza-based Palestinian ministry of Health said that some 37 Palestinians were injured by live ammunition in the northwestern the Gaza strip, without providing further details on the grade of their injuries.

Hundreds of Palestinians on Monday evening converged towards the buffer zone between Gaza and Israel and set tires on fire and threw stones at Israeli soldiers.

Protesters — who have been staging demonstrations since March 30 — demand the “right of return” to their homes in historical Palestine from which they were driven in 1948 to make way for the new state of Israel.

They also demand an end to Israel’s 11-year blockade of the Gaza Strip, which has gutted the coastal enclave’s economy and deprived its two million inhabitants of basic commodities.

According to the Health Ministry, more than 180 Palestinians have been martyred — and thousands more injured — since the rallies began some six months ago.
