JERUSALEM (AA) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he will name a new settlement in the Golan Heights after U.S. President Donald Trump.
“All Israelis were deeply moved when President Trump made his historic decision to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights,” Netanyahu said in video a message late Tuesday.
“After the Passover holiday, I intend to bring to the government a resolution calling for a new community on the Golan Heights named after President Donald J. Trump,” he said.
Last month, Trump signed a presidential proclamation officially recognizing the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as an Israeli territory.
Israel occupies roughly two-thirds of the wider Golan Heights as a de facto result of the 1967 Middle East war. It moved to formally annex the territory in 1981 — an action unanimously rejected at the time by the UN Security Council.
The UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution opposing Israel’s continued occupation of the Golan Heights.
