Iran test-fires new ballistic missile: News agency

ISTANBUL (AA) – Iran has allegedly test-fired a new class of ballistic missile with a 2,000-kilometer range, Iranian sources reported Monday.

“We test-fired the missile two weeks ago,” Iran’s semi-official Tasnim News Agency quoted Brigadier-General Ali Abdollahi as saying.

The new class of missile, he added, “has a range of 2,000 kilometers and an eight-meter margin of error”.

Abdollahi did not provide any information as to where the missile was tested or about what type of fuel it required.

The U.S. regards Iranian ballistic missile testing as a breach of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015), which calls on Iran to refrain from engaging in any activity related to missiles able to carry nuclear payloads.

Tehran, for its part, says the tests do not violate the resolution.

In March, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed financial sanctions on two groups it claimed were involved in Iran’s ballistic missile program.
