Iran: Academics warn against military role in politics

TEHRAN (AA) – More than 300 Iranian academics have sent a letter to President Hassan Rouhani criticizing the “army’s intervention in politics”, according to Iran-based Kalem website.

The academics, who come from 72 universities from across the country, demanded putting experts in government positions that affect foreign policy, energy and the economy.

They also warned against any military role in these areas.

The academics cited the advice of the late Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of the Iranian revolution, where he said the army, revolutionary guards and volunteer militias should not interfere in politics.
