Hundreds evacuated over unexploded World War II bomb

LONDON (AA) – An unexploded World War II bomb has caused the evacuation of hundreds of people from their homes in the western English town of Bath.

The device, thought to weigh around 250 kilograms (551 pounds), was discovered by contractors working at a school playground on Thursday.

A 300-meter exclusion zone around the site meant that hundreds of residents were evacuated and forced to spend the night in temporary accommodation.

Authorities said Friday that bomb disposal experts were using 250 tons of sand to build a barrier around the device, so that it could then be taken out of the town to an area where a controlled explosion can be carried out.

But police said residents may not be able to return to their homes until Sunday.

Unexploded devices dropped by German bombers in the 1940s are still routinely discovered in Britain, more than 70 years after the end of World War II, although most are usually defused in hours rather than days.
