SANTO DOMINGO. Dom. Rep. (AA) – Authorities in Honduras on Monday arrested four suspects linked to the murder of well-known environmentalist and human rights activist Berta Caceres.

Douglas Geovanny Bustillo, Mariano Díaz Chavez, Sergio Rodriguez Orellana and Atilio Duarte Meza were captured by military police officers in different areas of the Central American country during an operation known as Jaguar.

The suspects were captured in 10 simultaneous raids and transferred to the Criminal Investigation Agency, according to the public ministry.

“This action is legally supported and has been directed against suspects based on scientific evidence that support their participation within the unfortunate event,” it added.

Three of the suspects were employees of Desarrollos Energeticos SA (DESA) that is building a hydroelectric dam, to which Caceres opposed, according to a spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office.

The armed forces confirmed that Diaz Chavez holds the rank of major and Duarte Meza is a retired captain.

Caceres, 45, who had won the Goldman Environmental Prize award, was killed March 3 by two gunmen who broke into her home.

She said she had received death threats from DESA employees.

Authorities raided the company early last month in search of evidence linked to Caceres´ death.
