ANKARA (AA) – The Indian embassy in Ankara Tuesday marked the birth anniversary of pacifist independence leader Mahatma Gandhi with an early-morning march.

The embassy organized a “Peace Walk” to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Indian leader.

Speaking at the event, Indian Ambassador to Turkey Sanjay Bhattacharyya said: “Gandhi always relied on innate nature of humankind, and the strength and the ability to overcome all adversity.

“This is what led to very strong democratic tradition in India. ”

Emphasizing the Indian leader’s ability to say no, Bhattacharyya recalled the Non-Cooperation Movement — an attempt led by Gandhi to resist the British rule in India through non-violent means.

“In many ways, this gives people the strength to find their own ways within their own culture and heritage,” the ambassador said.

After the Peace Walk, participants made a stop before Gandhi's picture and left flowers.

In 2007, the UN declared Oct. 2 as the International Non-violence Day.
