Euro 2016: Slovakia stun Russia 2-1

PARIS (AA) – Slovakia stunned Russia 2-1 in their Euro 2016 Group B match on Wednesday at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille Metropole.

Slovakia took control in the first half with two goals from Vladimir Weiss and Marek Hamsik.

In the 32nd, Hamsik sent the ball to Weiss on the left. Weiss sped into the box and fired an excellent finish past Russia’s goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev.

Just 13 minutes later, Weiss passed the ball to Hamsik from a short corner, who then swept it beyond Akinfeev to fire home a storming shot into the far corner.

Russia tried to get back into the game with Denis Glushakov’s score in the 80th minute, made with Oleg Shatov’s assistance.

This is the first time Russia has conceded more than one goal in their last 35 competitive fixtures.
