Egyptian delegation leaves Gaza after truce talks

GAZA CITY, Palestine (AA) – A delegation from Egypt’s intelligence service left the Gaza Strip on Saturday after talks with Hamas leaders for truce with Israel, according to a Palestinian security official.

The delegation left the Palestinian territory via the Erez crossing, the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to media.

He, however, did not specify the destination of the Egyptian delegation.

The delegation had arrived in Gaza on Thursday and held talks with a number of Hamas leaders, including group leader in Gaza Yahya Sinwar.

On Tuesday, Gaza-based resistance factions and Israel reached an Egypt-brokered ceasefire deal that halted two days of Israeli attacks in Gaza after rocket fire from the enclave.

At least 14 Palestinians have been martyred — by Israeli airstrikes and artillery — across the blockaded Gaza Strip. At least one Israeli officer was reportedly killed and another injured.

In recent weeks, Egyptian officials have engaged in intense shuttle diplomacy between the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and Israel, during which they have met with Hamas, Fatah and Israeli officials.

The talks are aimed at hammering out a truce between Hamas and Israel and achieving reconciliation between rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah.
