COVID-19: Nigeria confirms 2 new deaths, 119 infections

ANKARA (AA) – Nigerian health authorities recorded two more coronavirus-related fatalities and 119 additional infections, bringing the death toll across the country to 1,132 and the tally of infections to 62,111 since March.

“On the 26th of October 2020, 119 new confirmed cases and 2 deaths were recorded in Nigeria,” the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said in its latest daily update early Tuesday.

“Till date, 62,111 cases have been confirmed, 57,571 cases have been discharged and 1,132 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory,” it added.

With over 20,800 infections, Lagos, the country's commercial capital, remained Nigeria’s worst-hit city. It is followed by the Federal Capital Territory, which includes the capital Abuja, with almost 6,000 cases, and the southwestern Plateau State, where more than 3,600 cases have been registered.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, is among the five hardest-hit countries on the continent, along with South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, and Ethiopia.

COVID-19 has claimed more than 1.16 million lives in 189 countries and regions since first being detected in Wuhan, China in December last year.

The pandemic deeply impacted economic activities across the world, causing significant drops in the GDP of several countries.
