COVID-19: 11 new cases in China, 16 in South Korea

ANKARA (AA) – China and South Korea recorded new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, while Australia and New Zealand are easing the measures.

Eleven people were found to have contracted the virus in mainland China, according to the National Health Commission. There were, however, no virus-linked deaths and all the new cases were people coming from abroad.

It was added that 10 of the cases were reported in the Inner Mongolia region with people coming abroad to the region north of the country.

In total, 4,634 people died of the virus in China while nearly 84,095 tested positive with 79,347 of them cured and discharged from hospitals, according to the US-based Johns Hopkins University.

– Situation in South Korea

South Korea reported 16 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

It was added that three of the cases were imported from abroad.

The overall count since the country's first case on Jan. 25 is now up to 11,206, including 267 deaths.

– Australia reopens schools in 2 states

Students returned to school in New South Wales and Queensland states of Australia where online education was launched in April as part of measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

A total of 7,118 coronavirus cases have been recorded in Australia and the death toll stands at 102.

– New Zealand eases coronavirus restrictions

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that the ban that does not allow more than 10 people to gather as part of COVID-19 measures will be stretched to 100 as of next Friday.

The number of overall coronavirus cases is 1,504 in New Zealand and the death toll is 21.

After originating in China last December, COVID-19 has spread to at least 188 countries and regions.

The pandemic has killed more than 345,500 worldwide, with 5.44 million total infections and 2.18 million recoveries, according to figures compiled by the US-based Johns Hopkins University.
