Coronavirus deaths surge in Saudi Arabia, Qatar

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia / DOHA, Qatar (AA) – Saudi Arabia reported on Wednesday 42 more deaths from the coronavirus, while Qatar announced four new deaths.

The Saudi Health Ministry reported 3,036 infections along with 3,211 recoveries over the past 24 hours.

The new figures brought the country's total infections to 220,144 — including 2,059 deaths and 158,050 recoveries.

In Qatar, the Health Ministry said 608 more people contracted the virus while 1,204 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours.

Qatar's total infections stand at 101,553 — including 138 deaths and 96,107 recoveries.

More than 11.8 million COVID-19 cases have been reported around the world, with fatalities nearing 545,000, and recoveries exceeding 6.4 million, according to figures compiled by the US' Johns Hopkins University.
