KABUL, Afghanistan (AA) – A U.S. soldier with the NATO force in Afghanistan was killed in an armed attack, the NATO mission to the country announced on Tuesday.

Details were not given on the soldier’s identity and the place of the attack.

As the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force entered the 18th year of its combat mission in Afghanistan in 2019, it has evolved into training and advising of the nascent Afghan security forces.

Around 12,000 foreign troops from 28 NATO allies and 14 other partner nations agreed to support the NATO mission in Afghanistan.

The U.S. is a part of NATO's Resolute Support Mission (RSM) — launched in January 2015 — to train advise and assist the Afghan security forces and institutions.
