40 Houthi rebels killed in clashes with Yemeni forces

ADEN (AA) – Forty Houthi rebels and two soldiers were killed Sunday in clashes in western Yemen’s Al Hudaydah province.

The military said in a statement that the Houthis were attempting to breach the front lines of government forces in Hays and Ad Durayhimi districts in the south of Al Hudaydah.

It noted that 55 rebels were wounded as well as 10 soldiers.

The Houthis' attacks to escalate tensions on the fronts in Al Hudaydah undermined the work carried out by the UN to establish peace in Al Hudaydah city, it added.

The Houthis have not issued any statements.

Yemen has been wracked by violence and instability since 2014, when Houthi rebels captured much of the country, including the capital Sana’a.

A Saudi-led coalition aimed at reinstating the Yemeni government has worsened the situation, causing one of the world’s worst man-made humanitarian crises as millions are on the brink of starvation.
