IZMIR, Turkey (AA) – At least 20 suspects were arrested in Turkey's eastern province of Mus for spreading terror propaganda, a security source said on Friday.

The provincial police department conducted an operation to nab the suspects who had chanted slogans in favor of PKK/KCK terror group and were involved in terror incidents after Nevruz (Spring) festival celebrations in Bulanik and Malazgirt districts, said the source, who refused to be named due to restriction on speaking to the media.

The police arrested 16 suspects in Bulanik and four in Malazgirt.

The Nevruz festival is celebrated on March 21 mainly in Iran, Afghanistan, India, and Turkic republics such as Azerbaijan, countries of the Caucasus, Albania, and Macedonia.

The PKK — listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU — waged a terror campaign against Turkey for more than 30 years and has been responsible for the death of nearly 40,000 people.

More than 1,200 Turkish security personnel and civilians, including a number of women and children, have been killed since July 2015 alone when the group resumed its armed campaign against the country.
