TEHRAN (AA) – Two Iranian Revolutionary Guards have been killed during the clashes in Syria, said an Iranian news agency on Sunday.

According to the official Tasnim news agency, bodies of the guards were buried in the provinces of Albarz (north) and Kerman (south), without indicating the exact date and place of their deaths.

Unofficial figures indicated that at least 2,400 Iranian soldiers have been killed in Syria since the beginning of the crisis in the country.

Iran is a staunch supporter of the Bashar al-Assad regime and has deployed forces to fight alongside regime forces against opposition groups.

Syria has been locked in a vicious civil war since early 2011 when the Assad regime cracked down on pro-democracy protests with unexpected ferocity.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of people are believed to have been killed and millions more displaced by the conflict.
